AI and Boutique Agencies in 2026: The Marketing Brief Podcast

Co-founder, CEO & CTO
Brian Aucoin invited me onto The Marketing Brief Podcast for Season 3, Episode 5, titled "Dom and Brian Breakdown AI & Agency Work in 2026." Brian leads brand marketing work through Aucoin Consulting, after stops at goodr, POW, Mattel, and Moonbug. He introduced me as someone bullish on the promise of AI, and I am.
We covered six topics: how digital products are evolving, what AI does for the people inside an organization, why smaller agencies fit 2026, managing fractional employees, agency culture, and where technology goes from here.

Key Takeaways
- Embrace AI for efficiency.
- Boutique agencies foster closer client relationships.
How Digital Products Are Evolving
The first question in a scoping conversation used to be which product to build. It now includes which manual process inside the business the product should take over. Dom & Tom builds process as well as product today, because AI connects the two more tightly than it did a few years ago.
What AI Changes for the People Inside a Company
Brian framed the episode around AI increasing what an employee can do inside an organization. That matches what we see on our own team. Designers, strategists, engineers, and infrastructure people all want the tools, and the limit is the time it takes to standardize the ones that work and measure what they do for quality and cost.
Companies get the capability gain when someone owns that work. A license for an AI tool with no defined place in the workflow adds a subscription and leaves the way the team works unchanged.
Why Smaller Agencies Fit 2026
The takeaway Brian pulled from our conversation is that boutique agencies foster closer client relationships. The mechanics are easy to name. The client talks to the people building the product, and decisions happen in the working session. Most of the people doing the work at Dom & Tom are senior, and they work in small teams with AI-native workflows that keep quality up and cost down.
Managing Fractional Employees
We also got into the challenges of managing fractional employees. Dom & Tom runs as a distributed team, with coworking space in New York and Chicago. Long-term contractors join the weekly team meetings the same way full-time staff do, and specialists hired for a single piece of work get a lighter onboarding. The standard for both groups is the same: get in, help, and say so when you do not know something.
Agency Culture
Our motto is Do Good. Be Good. I rank people ahead of clients and clients ahead of projects, and I explained why on The CTO Compass. A distributed team depends on routines that bring people together, and the weekly meeting that includes long-term contractors is one of ours.
Where Technology Goes From Here
We closed the episode on hope for the future of technology. My view is that AI works best when it increases what people can do and a person stays responsible for what ships. I expect that to hold for a long time.
